About the Shows

Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Goldilocks stumbles on the home of a family of Bears in the deep woods and causes comic mayhem.  In this production, ballet is used to help tell the classic story.

The Emperor's New Clothes
Lots of fun is in store when Peter, the mischievous tailor, comes up with his sure-fire get rich quick scheme--to embarrass the vain Emperor and make off with a basket of gold.

Notes from Artistic Director Charles Burr

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Something NEW for Popcorn Theatre!  This play with dance was commissioned by Young Michigan Dances several years ago.  Bobb James and I worked hard to make sure that it was a great way to introduce kids to the joys of ballet.  I think “The Nutcracker” is great, but with nothing but dance, kids can become confused as to what’s happening.  With “Goldilocks,” it feels like any other funny Popcorn theatre show—but there are three dances that help tell the story of her encounter with a family of Bears.    Recommended for every aspiring ballerina of any age….

The Emperor’s New Clothes

This version was written for the well-known touring group ArtReach out of Cincinnati, Ohio.  A family of strolling actors are ready to put on a performance, if only they can find their son.  Once they do, the Father proclaims they will perform Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of a vain, silly ruler who is hoodwinked by a wily tailor.  The tailor makes the Emperor believe that he is weaving cloth the only the intelligent can see!  The resulting confusion has entertained families for 173 years…

Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs

What do these favorite tales have in common?  The Big Bad Wolf, of course.  This production allows for both stores to be told, but it takes our audience to help tell the stories.  This is participation theatre, where volunteers will be pressed into service in many different ways so that Little Red can get to Granny’s house and to help those slow learning pigs build a better house. The cast will be looking for budding actors all through the middle of July.
