Authentic Native American Program Comes to Tibbits
COLDWATER – Tibbits’ spring school programming kicks off with “Reg Pettibone’s Authentic Native American Program” on March 27, giving middle school audiences a better understanding of true native culture.
Reg Pettibone, a full blooded Woodland Native American from the HoChunk Nation, along with his wife Marca from the Paiute Nation, present a unique and engaging cultural performance that amazes, entertains and educates. Reg, also a champion powwow dancer, draws on his traditional upbringing to provide the audience with a better understanding of the Native American culture through dance, song, stories, audience participation and a hands-on artifacts display.
ASAMA Coldwater Manufacturing has teamed with Tibbits to help the theatre present their school programming series. In addition to “Reg Pettibone’s Authentic Native American Program,” Young Michigan Dances will delight elementary and middle school audiences on April 10 with “Campfire Stories from the New World,” Michigan Shakespeare Festival presents “Romeo and Juliet” on May 7, and Wild Swan Theatre will conclude the series with their presentation of “Jack & the Beanstalk” on May 8 and 9. This past fall Tibbits school programming series also presented ArtReach and JazzReach for area students. The program is also funded in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Michigan Humanities Council.
Targeted primarily to middle school audiences, “Reg Pettibone’s Authentic Native American Program” will be presented for two performances on March 27 at 9:30am and 12:30pm. Schools participating include Legg Middle School and Alternative Choices from Coldwater, St. Mary’s from Bronson, Nottawa Community Schools from Sturgis, and various homeschool groups. Other groups, schools and individuals with children are encouraged to make reservations, which are still available for both shows. The cost is $2 per person for all performances except “Romeo & Juliet”, with $5 per person for that performance.
For more information or to make a reservation for your school or homeschool group, please go online to Tibbits.org or call 517.278.6029. Arrangements should be made in advance as some performances sell out. All performances will be held at the historic Tibbits Opera House at 14 S. Hanchett St. in Coldwater, MI.
