Pippin—An Extraordinary Musical Adventure Comes to Tibbits

COLDWATER—Enjoy a spectacle-driven theatre extravaganza as Tibbits Summer Theatre presents the Broadway musical “Pippin,” the tale of a young man in search of fulfillment, opening July 23.

A troupe of dancers tells the story in this stylized musical of young prince Pippin’s quest for true happiness. Pippin, played by Davis Wayne, explores the glories of war, the temptations of love, and the intrigues of political power before discovering happiness lies not in the extraordinary but in the ordinary moments of every day.

The troupe, led by Nick Raynor as the Leading Player, has “Magic To Do” as they introduce Pippin and his father Charles, played by Derek Mellor. The story explores the struggles of young Prince Pippin against his father a tyrannical king. The responsibility of leading the Holy Roman Empire leaves Pippin lost and confused, so he leaves his post in search of something more fulfilling. Soon a young widow named Catherine, played by Jaclyn Collins, comes into Pippin’s life with her child Theo played by Coldwater local Lexi Galliers, and Pippin explores life as a part of a family. The show is recommended for PG-13 for its adult themes and suggestive dance style.

“Pippin” will dance across the stage with choreography and direction by Kevin Halpin. The cast also includes Gail Betts-Trader, Lizzy Palmer, and Stuart Kofron, as well as the troupe of players made up of Allison Canning, Holly Fuller, Nikki Ferrara, Maureen Duke, Ashley Elizabeth Smith, Benjamin Shimkus, Stuart Kofron, Vince Orabona, Isaac Jankowski, Dougie Robbins, Drew Porrett, Joey Gugliemelli and William Patrick Rivera.

“Pippin” opened in 1972 and ran on Broadway for 1,944 performances with amazing choreography by Bob Fosse and a score by Broadway giant Stephen Schwartz. After writing “Godspell,” Schwartz jumped from Off-Broadway to On- with the extravagant score of “Pippin.” Still to come from him were other Broadway hits “Wicked,” “Working,” “Children of Eden” and the Disney films “Pocahontas” and “The Hunchback of Norte Dame” and many more.

“It was a record that never left my turntable,” raves artistic director Charles Burr. “The story of a young man searching to find where he fits into the grand scheme of the world proved to be the perfect show for a young man struggling to do the same. This show is sure to captivate a wide range of audiences with its unforgettable music, dazzling choreography, and universal storytelling.”

“Pippin” is produced with the support of the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU). The CBPU has provided safe, reliable, competitive and efficient utility products and services for the same community in which it is owned and operated since 1981. Performances of “Pippin” will be held at 8 p.m. on July 23 through 25 and July 30 through August 1, and at 2 p.m. on July 23 and 29.

Tickets with fees for “Peter Pan” are $33 for reserved seating with discounts for members, groups and students. General seating in the upper balcony is available for $12. For the best value passbooks offer the option of six tickets to be used throughout the summer and offer nearly a 10 percent discount. COLDWATER – Tibbits Summer Theatre continues in July with Broadway’s timeless classic “Peter Pan,” running July 9 through July 18, 2015.

This high-flying Tony Award-winning musical whisks audiences away to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up. Peter, played by Lizzy Palmer, and his fairy sidekick Tinkerbell visit the Darling children’s nursery late one night. The children played by Ashley Smith, William Rivera and Grant Rupp, with a sprinkle of fairy dust, soar with Peter to Neverland on the adventure of a lifetime. The travelers come face to face with danger as they encounter a ticking crocodile, a band of pirates, a fierce Native tribe and the villainous Captain Hook.

Directed by Kevin Halpin, with musical direction by Cheryl Van Duzen and choreography by Dougie Robbins. The show’s cast also includes a company of 20 actors from across the country plus a couple of locals. Benjamin Shimkus, Davis Wayne, Stuart Kofron, Vince Orbona, Isaac Jankowski and Jacob Covert play the Lost Boys. Tiger Lily, played by Jessica Bracy, leads the mischievous Native tribe of Jaclyn Collins, Allison Canning, Holly Fuller, Nikki Ferrara, and Ashley Smith. They join in friendship with the Lost Boys after Peter calls for a truce. “Peter Pan” is the perfect show for the child in all of us who dreamed of soaring high and staying a kid forever.

Artistic Director Charles Burr, who plays Hook, recounts his early captivation with the show and its air-bound acrobatics. “I am quite sure that I do what I do today due to the three and a half year-old me watching Mary Martin fly across my television screen,” he says. “The company Flying by Foy has flown Peter since the beginning—and they will be right here to do the same at Tibbits.”

History of Peter Pan

Written by Sir J.M. Barrie, “Peter Pan” the play debuted in London in 1904 with Nina Boucicault as Peter and Gerald DuMaurier, uncle to the boys who inspired the story, as Hook. On Broadway in 1905 it starred Maude Adams, who played the Tibbits in its early years. In the early 1950s, Pan took Broadway again with movie stars Jean Arthur and Boris Karloff featuring incidental songs by Leonard Bernstein.

In 1954 the full-fledged musical arrived with Mary Martin in one of her signature roles and the foppish Hook of Cyril Ritchard. It was broadcast live on television in 1955 and was then performed again in 1960 and taped for future airings.

Lyrics for the Broadway show were written by Carolyn Leigh with additional lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, music by Morris (Moose) Charlap and additional music by Jule Styne. It was originally directed, choreographed and adapted by Jerome Robbins.

Tibbits Summer Theatre opens its 52nd professional season with the Neil Simon comedy classic “The Odd Couple” on Thursday, June 25 running through July 3, 2015.

The Tony-Award-winning play centers around mismatched roommates, the uptight Felix Unger, a neurotic, neat freak played by Isaac Jankowski and his slovenly friend Oscar Madison played by Derek Mellor. Felix arrives at the weekly poker party depressed and out of sorts after being thrown out by his wife. Fearing Felix will try something desperate, Oscar, himself in the process of being divorced by his wife, invites Felix to move in with him. Within a few days, this mismatched pair is on the verge of mutual murder: Felix frustrated by Oscar’s slovenliness, while Oscar is driven insane by Felix’s obsession with cleanliness.

Directed by Charles Burr the show’s cast also includes Vince Orabona, Ben Shimkus, Davis Wayne and Joey Gugliemeli as the poker buddies. Allison Canning and Jaclyn Collins play the Pigeon sisters Oscar’s neighbors with whom Oscar attempts to set up a potentially passionate double date. This beloved comedy by Neil Simon is both surprisingly poignant and side-splittingly funny.

According to Burr who also serves as Artistic Director for Tibbits Summer Theatre, “We’ve been doing a lot of brand new plays these last few seasons and I thought it was time for one by the master, Neil Simon.” He adds, “‘The Odd Couple’ was last presented at Tibbits in 1969 when it was a new play just off its Broadway run.”

“The Odd Couple” first opened in 1965 winning a Tony nomination for Best Play and the Tony Award for Best Author of a Play. It was turned into a film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau and became a hit television sitcom in the 1970s starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. It has had numerous stage revivals and is now the newest CBS sitcom.

Miss Nelson Opens Popcorn Theatre Season

MsNelson1Tibbits Popcorn Theatre opens the 2015 season this weekend with “Miss Nelson is Missing,” based on the favorite children’s book by the same name. Performances are at 10 am on June 19, 20, 26 and 27.

Adapted for the stage by Jeffrey Hatcher and based on the book by Harry Allard and James Marshall, “Miss Nelson Is Missing!” centers on an unruly classroom of students who do not realize how good their teacher is until she disappears.

The cast from the professional company includes Diane Long, Dougie Robbins, Vince Orabona, Ben Shimkus, Rachel Doane, William Rivera, Nikki Ferrara, Jacob Covert, Holly Fuller, Stuart Kofron. In the story Miss Nelson can’t control her classroom; she’s just too nice. When she disappears, her replacement is the hard-as-nails, detention-loving, recess-canceling, homework-overloading substitute teacher Viola Swamp! When the kids realize how much they miss Miss Nelson they’ll do anything—including hiring a private eye—to solve the mystery of her disappearance and bring her back.

The season closes with a pair of highly acclaimed musical groups with their favorite shows for children and families. Gemini will perform July 31 and August 1. Two huge Broadway musicals, a Tony-award-winning comedy classic and the follow up to last year’s smash hit comedy about the tribulations of middle age, highlights the 52nd season of Tibbits Summer Theatre opening June 25 at the historic Tibbits Opera House.

This season kicks off with plenty of laughs on June 25 when Tibbits presents Neil Simon’s classic comedy “The Odd Couple”. The plot centers around two mismatched roommates. The uptight Felix Unger, a neurotic, neat freak is thrown out by his wife and moves in with his friend Oscar Madison, the easygoing slob and sports writer who loves to gamble and have a good time. Many people will remember “The Odd Couple” from the 1968 film and TV sitcom of the 1970s and the newest CBS sitcom. The play has also enjoyed a number of successful stage revivals throughout the years. (PG)

The comedy “Alone Together Again” closes the season. In a stand-alone story by Lawrence Roman, the same author as last summer’s smash hit, “Alone Together,” a middle-aged couple finds their peaceful life upended by the unexpected arrival of their parents. Elderly but active they dumps their problems on the unfortunate couple who after raising their family just want to be alone. (PG)

COLDWATER – Tibbits Summer Theatre will take flight next summer, literally, with an exciting season highlighted by the musical “Peter Pan” which will feature the boy who won’t grow up flying across the stage.

The 2015 season will open with the Neil Simon comedy, “The Odd Couple,” and then “Peter Pan.” It will continue with another big dance musical to be announced on February 2 and the season will close with “Alone Together Again,” a comedy which takes another look at the challenges of the population known as the sandwich generation.

According to Charles Burr, Tibbits Artistic Director for Summer Theatre, “It’s another nice mix of shows. The two musicals complement each other well. ‘Peter Pan’ will certainly be a show the whole family can enjoy. The other show which we can’t announce yet will still be in the vein of the big dance musicals audiences have loved the last few years.”

Burr adds, “The opening and closing shows are both situational comedies one from the 60s and the other written in the last few years, both very relatable and both a lot of fun.” According to Burr many people know ‘The Odd Couple’ with Oscar the slob and Felix the clean freak trying to share an apartment. He says, “The closing show follows the play we did last summer about the kids moving back home. ‘Alone Together Again’ is about the couple, still hoping to become empty nesters, who now have their parents move in.”

Tibbits professional summer stock season has been entertaining local audiences and bringing people to Coldwater from across the United States and Canada since 1964. In those 52 years Tibbits has developed an outstanding reputation for quality theatre. Last summer it received 11 nominations for the Wilde Awards, Michigan’s theatre awards. In 2005 USA Today named Tibbits one of “10 great places to see the lights way off Broadway.”
