Summer Season continues with, ‘Guys and Dolls’
COLDWATER – Tibbits Summer Theatre presents the musical comedy “Guys and Dolls” with its fanciful underworld characters and memorable music from July 24 through August 2.
The story centers on a group of gamblers, showgirls, mission workers and unlikely romantic interests. Nathan Detroit, played by T.J. Besler is trying to find a safe place to host a high stakes craps game for some high rollers while at the same time averting matrimony to a frustrated Adelaide played by Charlotte Vaughn Raines. Do-gooder, Sarah Brown, played by Catherine Skojec has dreams of finding her Mr. Right while Sky Masterson, played by Tyler Whitman, makes a wager that he can win Sarah’s heart.
Tibbits Artistic Director, Charles Burr will take the role of Arvide, Sarah Brown’s father. Burr describes the show as, “A delightful mix of colorful characters, underworld slang, and comic romance combined into a classic New York musical.” He adds, “It’s an amusing storyline that is as entertaining today as it was sixty years ago.”
Guys and Dolls was a resounding hit in 1950 when it ran for 1200 performances and eventually won 5 Tony Awards. Samuel Goldwyn purchased the motion-picture rights for a million dollars and cast Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons in the leading roles. Tibbits Summer Theater has done the show twice—in 1968 and 1979. Tibbits Executive Director, Christine Delaney said, “We are long overdue to be delighted by these wonderful characters.”
“Guys and Dolls” is billed as a musical fable of Broadway. With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, the plot is based on a short story and characters of Damon Runyon. Audiences will enjoy the collection of unique underworld characters from Nicely Nicely played by Liam Johnson, Harry the Horse played by Nick Raynor, Rusty Charlie played by Nate Klingenberg, Benny Southstreet played by Zeke Edmonds, Big Jule played by Joshua Smith, and Lt. Brannigan played by Jonah Kramer. The show is also filled with fun music and lively toe-tapping numbers including, “Take Back your Mink,” “Bushel and a Peck,” “Luck Be a Lady” “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” and the title song.
Trinity Bird, director for this production said “The company is amazing this summer. We are having a great time in rehearsal; I’m confident the audience will feel that same spirit and energy.”
