Jack Gerhard makes his Tibbits debut as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar.


COLDWATER – One of the greatest stories ever told comes to life in the ultimate rock opera experience Jesus Christ Superstar, opening June 28 at the historic Tibbits Opera House.

This global blockbuster retells the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ from the perspective of Judas Iscariot. As Christ’s followers grow more fervent, Judas must make his fateful choice between faith and betrayal. Filled with an exciting mix of musical styles that draw upon 1970s rock, gospel, folk, and funk themes, this contemporary imagining of the biblical tale features high-energy dance and powerful storytelling.

The professional cast is made up of returning Tibbits favorites along with excited newcomers from across the nation. The direction and design staff includes direction and choreography by Michigan’s Wilde Award winner Kevin Halpin, music direction by Cheryl VanDuzen, scenic design by Johnmichael Bohach, costume design by Emily Westing, lighting design by Catie Blencowe, and props by Hannah Cormier.

Performances are June 28-30 and July 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. with matinees at 2 p.m. on June 28 and a special Sunday matinee on July 1. To add to the Tibbits experience, Tibbits Ghost Light Bar in the theatre’s elevator lobby serves wine, beer, and a limited selection of mixed drinks and themed beverages before the show and at intermission. After the Saturday, June 30 performance, the public is invited to join the cast and crew for a talkback reception to discuss the show and ask questions. After the Friday, July 6 performance, the public is invited to go down to the art gallery for “Cocktails with the Cast and Crew,” a more intimate afterglow mingling experience.
