Pirate School Coming to Tibbits
COLDWATER – Area elementary students will experience “piratical fun” while learning about simple machines, navigation, air pressure and more in the one-man educational pirate show Pirate School: The SCIENCE of Pirates for Tibbits’ school programming series on Tuesday, March 6.
The SCIENCE of Pirates is the swashbuckling one-man show created and performed by veteran New York physical comedian and actor David Engel. It is an exciting and motivating show unlike any science comedy show on the high-seas today that introduces students to simple concepts outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards. Historically, seafarers have pushed science and technology forward and who better to captivate and expand children’s horizons than the swaggering staff of Pirate School? Students will learn about Simple Machines, Air Pressure/Left, Math=Navigation, Aerodynamics of a cannonball, and, of course, things that go BOOM!
David Engel is an accomplished, award-winning entertainer, performing over 250 shows a year at theaters, festivals, libraries, and corporate events nationwide. David has worked in TV, commercials and film and has been seen on stages across the US, Europe, Singapore and China. He’s played for notable companies as Steppenwolf Theater, 500 Clown, Redmoon Theatre, and for twelve years as a “clown doctor” with the Big Apple Circus’ world renowned in-hospital Clown Care Program.
Asama Coldwater Manufacturing has teamed with Tibbits to help the theatre present its school performance series. In addition to Pirate School: The SCIENCE of Pirates!, Wild Swan Theater will also present A Honey Pot of Pooh Stories and Shipwrecked in April, and high school students will see their English lesson come to life as Michigan Shakespeare Festival presents Romeo and Juliet in May. The program is also funded in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Michigan Humanities Council.
Pirate School: The SCIENCE of Pirates! will be presented for two performances at 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. Schools participating include Jefferson Elementary, Pansophia Academy, and St. Charles Borromeo from Coldwater; Ryan Elementary and St. Mary’s from Bronson; and Carlin Park Elementary from Angola, IN. While the 10:00 performance is close to being sold out, other groups, schools and individuals with children are encouraged to make reservations for the 12:00pm show.
For more information or to make a reservation, please call Tibbits at 517.278.6029. The cost is $2 per person. Arrangements should be made in advance as some performances fill up. All performances will be held at the historic Tibbits Opera House at 14 S. Hanchett St. in Coldwater, MI.
