Trine’s Celtic-Themed Concert on St. Patrick’s Day

COLDWATER – Tibbits joins with the Trine University Music Department for a Celtic-themed concert on St. Patrick’s Day at the Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, Michigan. The concert is presented as a benefit for the arts in Michiana.

Trine’s Four Thirty Jazz Band and the Trine University Wind Ensemble perform this free concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17. Donations at the door will be split between the Trine Music Department and Tibbits. As a special addition to the performance Trine’s Men’s Choir will perform a selection as well.

“This is the first time our ensembles have had the opportunity of performing in the Tibbits Opera House and we are very excited to offer a concert in such a fine, historic venue,” said Mark Kays, chair of the Department of Music and director of instrumental music. “The concert falls on St. Patrick’s Day and will definitely have an Irish, or more specifically, a Celtic or Gaelic theme,” Kays said. “We will even be including the Great Highland Pipes on two of the selections.”

The Four Thirty Jazz Band, under the direction of Trine instructor Christopher Lizak, doctor of musical arts (D.M.A.), will perform a variety of music from swing to funk.

The Wind Ensemble, directed and conducted by Kays, will perform “Celtic Music of the Cinema.” This portion of the concert features music from The War Horse, Braveheart, How to Train Your Dragon and The Lord of the Rings trilogy featuring The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. It will also include a special arrangement of The Hobbit by Kays and performed by the Trine University Men’s Choir, directed by professor Monica Vernot, director of vocal music.
