Tibbits July Volunteer of the Month: Nancy Mahle
COLDWATER – Tibbits has named Nancy Mahle as its July volunteer of the month for her dedication to the historic theatre during its Tibbits Summer Theatre season.
A long-time supporter, Mahle recently returned to the area. She became involved again with Tibbits this summer as an usher and was always available to fill in for last-minute cancellations. Her willingness to help, take a leadership role and her encouraging and upbeat attitude led to her selection as volunteer of the month.
Mahle first became involved at Tibbits in 1993 when she auditioned for a Coldwater Community Theatre production of “South Pacific” and was asked to play the part of Bloody Mary. She also acted as producer for Tibbits Young Audiences (TYA) alongside Alma Marquardt over the course of 11 years. She continued helping with the Legg Middle School musicals and then acted as musical director for TYA musicals.

Originally from a little town in Upstate New York, Mahle moved to Coldwater in 1976 after graduating from Western Michigan University and became one of the two new elementary music teachers. Now retired, she still enjoys subbing in the schools from which she retired. She loves to travel and enjoy long car trips with her husband, Sherman Perkins. At home, she still loves playing her music as well as sewing and quilting.
“Meeting and visiting with people is a wonderful experience when you are volunteering,” she said. “I believe there’s a song that goes, ‘Make New Friends.’ That’s what it’s all about-helping others and giving of your talents and making lifelong friendships.”
The Volunteer of the Month is chosen by Tibbits staff. Selection is based on the hours and/or service, as well as leadership, special skills or expertise shared. Criteria may be project specific or general support and volunteerism. In recognition of this award, Mahle received a $25 Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce Debit Card.
Tibbits is always looking for more volunteers in a variety of areas: ushering, working the gift shop or concessions area, doing general office help, sorting archival materials, planting flowers, decorating the theater, and much more. Those interested in volunteering should contact Tirsha Odisher at Tibbits at 517-278-6029 or boxoffice@Tibbits.org. Tibbits Opera House is located at 14 S.
