COLDWATER – Make sure you’ve studied and get the juice boxes in the cooler, because The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is coming to the stage at Tibbits Opera House, starting on July 25. This production, which will finish off Tibbits 2025 Summer Theatre Season, is generously co-sponsored by Case Realty Group and WTVB.
In The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, six quirky tweens are determined to outspell each other for the coveted Putnam County Spelling Bee championship. While tackling a series of ultra-challenging words, these spellers share hilariously awkward stories from their home lives that could make anyone question the definition of “normal.” One speller will walk away with the trophy and bragging rights, while the others face the soul-crushing humiliation of a “ding” for a missed word and the consolation prize of a juice box. What could be worse than that?
As a winner of the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee keeps audiences in stitches with its quick-witted dialogue and outrageous characters. It’s one spelling event that proves it’s not just about winning, but about having a good laugh along the way!

Tibbits Summer Theatre is proud to present “Little Shop of Horrors” running July 11-12, and 16-19, at Tibbits Opera House, generously sponsored by Frederick Family Dental.
COLDWATER – Tibbits Opera House is excited to welcome the cult classic musical Little Shop of Horrors to the stage starting Friday, July 11, and running through Saturday, July 19. The show is part of the Tibbits Summer Theatre series, and is generously sponsored by Frederick Family Dental.
Little Shop of Horrors centers around hard-luck floral assistant Seymour Krelborn, whose life changes dramatically when he discovers a peculiar little plant he names “Audrey II.” As more and more people flock to Mushnik’s Skid Row Flower Shop to observe the unique and heretofore unknown plant, its size—and its hunger for blood—continue to increase.
The history of Little Shop dates all the way back to 1960, as Roger Corman co-wrote, directed, and produced the original film of the same name, a dark comedy—not a musical—which went on to become a cult-classic thanks to local TV broadcasts. In 1982, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman provided the music, lyrics, and book for a stage musical produced off-Broadway. Then, in 1986, that stage musical was adapted into a new film starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene, who reprised her role from the stage production. Despite its well-known status among theatre-goers today, the show did not actually receive a true Broadway run until 2003.
Little Shop of Horrors features a doo-wop score that’ll have audiences humming and a plot that spirals into outrageous hilarity, as Audrey II grows further and further out of control. This Drama Desk Award-winning musical proves that mixing ambition with a plant that sings and eats people produces a show that’s absolutely to die for!
Little Shop of Horrors runs July 11-12, and July 16-19. Tickets and information are available at Tibbits.org, or by calling 517.278.6029. All performances are held at the historic Tibbits Opera House, 14 S. Hanchett Street, in Coldwater.
Frederick Family Dental has been a sponsor of Tibbits Summer Theatre since 2019, and Tibbits wishes to extend its gratitude to Drs. Evan and Kate Frederick and their staff for their continued support.
COLDWATER – As a part of the ongoing effort to improve every aspect of Tibbits Opera House, from the building to its requisite technology in providing top of the line entertainment, Tibbits has purchased a new light board just in time for the summer theatre season.
This effort was made possible through the combined donations of the Coldwater Noon Club and the Sunrise Rotary Club, both longtime supporters of Tibbits, the arts and the broader Coldwater community. Each organization contributed $6,500 for the new system, a $13,000 investment.
“We are thankful for the ongoing support of both the Coldwater Noon Club and the Sunrise Rotary Club, who made this purchase possible,” said Tibbits Executive Director Christine Delaney. “
The new light board will allow Tibbits Summer Theatre Lighting Designer Jamie Gresens a greater range of options, and a more streamlined programming process for lighting his light designs. This will enhance the experience for theatre-goers as the Tibbits technical staff creates fresh new ways to tell the stories audiences will see unfold on stage.
The previous light board was purchased in 2014, and was designed for fewer lights and more conventional light fixtures. As the lighting system has been upgraded in the theatre with more LED fixtures and moving lights, the need for an upgraded light board console has increased accordingly. This new setup runs on the same software as the prior system, but with additional options, and greater operational capacity.
Tibbits Summer Theatre features a professional company of actors, designers and technicians from across the country, and offers at least six performances of each mainstage show, with both matinee and evening performances available. Additionally, Tibbits Popcorn Theatre offers five family-friendly shows Friday and Saturday mornings beginning June 6 and running through August 2.

What actions do we take to achieve that success and what effect do those actions and outcomes have on our careers, relationships, and lives? Each production explores this in its own unique way: oftentimes hilarious, frequently heartfelt, and always, no matter how extreme the circumstances or larger than life the characters, rooted in our own universal humanity,” Sage added. “I’m excited to fill the theatre with laughs, fantastic music, honest storytelling, and most importantly YOU.”
