TIBBITS CLASSIC FILM SERIES RETURNS!
COLDWATER— Tibbits Classic Film Series returns for a third year September 29 at 7pm with a double feature showcasing the humorous and dramatic abilities of silver screen legend Marilyn Monroe.
The evening will begin with one of Marilyn Monroe’s best dramatic roles, the dark thriller Niagara. While on vacation at Niagara Falls Polly Cutler (Jean Peters) begins to suspect the woman in the cabin next door (Monroe) is plotting with her lover to kill her husband George. After disclosing her theory to her husband Ray, he accuses Polly of imagining the entire thing and she decides to uncover the truth alone, a decision that may prove deadly for her.
Ending the night will be the light-hearted comedy The Seven Year Itch. With his family away for their annual summer holiday, New Yorker Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) decides he has the opportunity to live a bachelor’s life – to eat and drink what he wants and basically enjoy life without a wife or son. His devotion to his family is tested when the beautiful but ditsy blond from the apartment above his (Monroe) catches his eye and they start spending time together. It’s all innocent until Sherman’s feelings of attraction to the girl begin to play out in comically lustful and imaginary fantasies.
Originally starting as a one night showing on Halloween in October of 2016, the Classic Film Series has transformed into a ten-month long annual event. Each year Tibbits presents a series of double features meant to highlight the golden era of Hollywood while not ignoring classic films from other eras. Ensuring that there is something for everyone, this film series will include gritty noir thrillers, murder mysteries, musicals, sci-fi adventures, schlocky monster movies, comedies, and for the first time an 80s classic double feature presenting two films directed by John Carpenter, the action/adventure comedy Big Trouble in Little China and the paranoia- fueled monster hunt The Thing. Also included in this year’s line-up will be a screening of the future Academy award nominees for best animated and live action shorts films of 2018. While there is no charge for admission for the rest of the Classic Film Series, this special event will be $8 a ticket.
“Seeing a movie on the big screen, even if it is one of your favorites, is such a completely different experience then watching it at home. It’s how these films were meant to be seen,” said Tibbits movie guru Matt Biolchini.
Concessions, including a cash bar, will be available for purchase in the elevator lobby at the Ghost Light Bar during all screenings. The 2018-2019 Classic Film Series is sponsored by Matthew Christopher, DDS, PC. All showings take place at the historic Tibbits Opera House, 14 S. Hanchett St. in Coldwater, MI.
