Tibbits Offers School Performances
COLDWATER – Area students will experience live theatre, dance, and storytelling as Tibbits presents its school programming series this spring with four different shows at the historic theatre.
Asama Coldwater Manufacturing has teamed with Tibbits to help the theatre present this series, which will begin with a “Reg Pettibone’s Authentic Native American Program” on March 27 at 9:30am and 12:30pm. This performance will provide middle school audiences with a better understanding of true native culture through dance, song, stories, audience participation and a hands-on artifacts display.
On April 10, Young Michigan Dances will delight elementary and middle school audiences with “Campfire Stories from the New World,” a combination of professional dance, storytelling and theater to bring several stories from children’s literature to life. Performances for “Campfire Stories from the New World” will take place at 9:30am and 12:45pm.
Next, Michigan Shakespeare Festival presents “Romeo and Juliet” on May 7 at 9am. There will also be a 12:00pm show if there’s enough interest. Shakespeare’s tragedy of feuding families and forbidden love is the perfect compliment to any high school curriculum. It’s also a great precursor to Tibbits Summer Theatre’s presentation of “West Side Story.”
Wild Swan Theatre will conclude the series with their presentation of “Jack & the Beanstalk” on May 8 at 9:30am and 11:30am. This production, perfect for preschool through second grade, tells a humorous version of Jack’s adventure climbing the magical beanstalk and meeting a very silly (and unscary) giant.
The program is also funded in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Michigan Humanities Council. The cost is $2 per person for all performances except “Romeo & Juliet”, with $5 per person for that performance.
This past fall Tibbits school programming series also presented ArtReach and JazzReach for area students. For more information or to make a reservation for your school or homeschool group, please call Tibbits at 517.278.6029. Arrangements should be made in advance as some performances fill up. All performances will be held at the historic Tibbits Opera House at 14 S. Hanchett St. in Coldwater, MI.
